Rapi Nui / Easter Island, Chile

Leaving  Peru, we managed our way out to Easter Island, or Rapi Nui as the locals call it. Not far from Tahiti, it's a five hour flight over the Pacific from mainland Chile. The Island's history is shrouded in mystery, but it is know that the island once supported a civilization estimated as high as 7,000 strong. It is believed that once the inhabitants  depleted the Island's native palm trees, society collapsed, an estimated 300 years before  European contact.
