Pool Session-Wet Exits and Rescues
This is your last chance!
It is hard to envision paddling when the ground is covered with snow in mid April. Summer is coming. I promise.
With summer paddling, there are weekly paddles and trips on the planner and in the works. Let's have a fun and SAFE summer, by getting our game on early in the season!
Trip leaders require demonstration of your skills as a paddler.
There are NO exceptions. As an individual, you are responsible for your own safety, and collectively as a group, you are responsible for your own safety. Your skills, or lack of skills, affects the entire group. Wether you are on a casual evening paddle, or a dynamic water, long distance trip; an unintended capsize, a failed rescue, or a loss of gear or life, can really ruin your day.
These pool sessions will likely be your only opportunity to demonstrate those skills indoors.
After this, you will be expected to demonstrate your exit and rescues in the lakes. Pool sessions are also a good place to start improving your skills as a paddler, allowing you to advance to doing rescues in bumpy water. After all, who except Sipke, capsizes in calm flat water?
Most of us have, at minimum, taken training on basic strokes and rescues. But have you practiced?
Can you perform a T-Rescue in under a minute?
Can you perform a self rescue at all?
Are you comfortable doing a calm, practiced, efficient wet exit?
Where do you hang out in cold water when you've capsized and are waiting on help?
How much have you paddled this winter?
Practice-makes paddling more fun!
Practice-makes us more confident!
Practice-makes us safer!
New to paddling and have no idea what I'm talking about?
You should definitely start here! No worries, we'll teach you the basics and go from there.
Join us for a fun, warm, clean water practice and demonstration of your wet exits, self and T-Rescue skills.
Time permitting, we will discuss group dynamics, and explore other types of rescues.
You are expected to bring your own kayak and basic paddling gear. PFD, spray deck, paddle float, bilge pump, paddle and swim wear at a minimum. Neoprene is recommended, nose plugs and goggles if desired. There are lockers in the shower rooms, you will need to bring a lock. Please ensure that your gear (including your kayak) is spotlessly clean. If you do not have access to your kayak yet, please let Renee know and we will attempt to outfit you with something similar.
Space is limited, please register early to reserve your spot!
